Abhayagramam

Spread over a ten-acre plot in the village of Manchadi, in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, Abhayagramam is the centre of ABHAYA's multifaceted activities. KARMA, MITRA AND AHAYABALA function at Abhayagramam.

Karma Karma gives free treatment, care and skill development training to mental patients. They stay at ABHAYAgramam, learn to weave, make articles with banana-fibre and bamboo. In all, some 15 trades are available. They have lessons in signing and do gardening and farm work together. They are free to roam around, play and relax. It is a mental health center with a difference.

Mitra
A mental health and de-addiction centre, Mitra is a hospital for treating all kinds of mental disorders and substance abuse. A team of doctors, psychologists and nurses look after the patients. Apart from the most modern drug therapy, Mithra offers behavior therapy, individual, group, family and marital counseling and psycho diagnostics. Mitra is the only paid centre which supports all our activities and thus helps the other free units of ABHAYA.

Abhayabala
Abhayabala, a home of the deprived girl child, was born in 1996. Daughters of the inmates of Athani were the first children admitted. After the few girls from high risk groups and children who had gone through most harrowing experiences in their young lives came to us. Coming from grim and cheerless backgrounds, they found a home, and people to care for them in the beautiful surroundings in which Abhayabala, their new home, is situated. There are 60 girls with us now all going to school from pre-school upto Plus-2.

Some are attending vocational training courses also. They are a bright and energetic lot, some of them getting over a traumatic past slowly but surely. There are four resident teachers and other special teachers who help them with their studies and other activities. Abhayalaya is our hopeful 'tomorrow.'
